Gone are the days of high solar Feed in Tariffs (FiT, the rate at which excess solar energy produced at your home is purchased by the grid). Now, the FiT offered in Tasmania is only 5.5 c/kWh, down from 28 c/kWh a few years ago. This encourages the storage of excess energy during daylight hours for use overnight, thus mitigating the low FiT and allowing you to offset energy at peak rates.
Hybrid battery systems, where you are still connected to the grid, but have your own battery storage, have become more prevalent recently, with a shift to new technologies such as lithium ion (Li-ion), zinc bromide and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). These new generation batteries provide higher energy density than traditional lead acid batteries, with the added benefit of no ongoing maintenance or special safety installation requirements.
Hybrid battery systems have the added benefit of providing a backup power source, meaning that in the event of a power failure, your battery can power an essential circuit in your home for a period of time.
